Securing Supply for
a Growing District

The Abu Nuseir Water Reservoir and Pump Station project delivered a new storage and pumping facility for Miyahuna, Amman's water utility, to serve the Abu Nuseir distribution zone — one of the rapidly expanding residential areas in the north of the capital. As Amman's population grows and new neighbourhoods are developed, the city's water distribution network requires new storage capacity and pumping infrastructure to maintain consistent pressure and supply across each zone, and the Abu Nuseir facility was built to meet exactly that need.

CEC's scope on this project was primarily civil: construction of a reinforced-concrete reservoir tank sized to provide buffer storage for the distribution zone, a pump house building to accommodate the pumping equipment, and an associated electrical and control room from which the pumping operations are monitored and managed. The facility also includes pipework manifolds connecting the reservoir, pumps, and the distribution network, allowing water to be received, stored, and pumped onward to consumers as demand requires.

For residents of Abu Nuseir, a reliable local reservoir and pump station means consistent water pressure at all hours, reduced dependence on intermittent supply schedules, and resilience against fluctuations in the wider network. CEC delivered this facility under our First Grade Water and Sewerage classification, applying the same standards of reinforced-concrete construction and quality control used across our reservoir, dam, and pipeline projects nationwide.

Engineering Challenges of Reservoir & Pump Station Construction

Delivering a new reservoir and pump station within an active distribution zone involved a distinct set of technical challenges:

  • Watertight reservoir construction: The reinforced-concrete reservoir tank required careful joint detailing, waterproofing membranes, and curing control to achieve a fully watertight structure capable of holding treated drinking water without leakage or contamination risk.
  • Pump house and electrical coordination: The pump house building and electrical/control room had to be designed and constructed to accommodate the specific pump sets, switchgear, and control panel layouts required for the facility's duty/standby pumping configuration.
  • Pipework manifold integration: Inlet, outlet, overflow, and washout pipework manifolds were installed with precise levels and connections to ensure correct hydraulic operation between the reservoir, pumps, and the distribution network.
  • Phased tie-in to the live network: Connecting the new reservoir and pump station to Miyahuna's existing distribution mains required careful sequencing of tie-in works to avoid extended supply interruptions to the surrounding neighbourhood.

Scope of Work

CEC's construction scope at Abu Nuseir covered site preparation and excavation for the reservoir and pump house foundations; construction of the reinforced-concrete reservoir tank including waterproofing and roof slab; construction of the pump house building and electrical/control room; installation of inlet, outlet, overflow, and washout pipework manifolds with associated valves; civil works to receive and house the mechanical and electrical pumping equipment; and commissioning support including tank disinfection, pressure testing of pipework, and tie-in to the existing distribution network in coordination with Miyahuna.

Quality & Safety on Reservoir Construction

Reservoir construction for potable water demands strict attention to material quality and hygiene throughout the build. CEC used certified concrete mixes and waterproofing systems appropriate for drinking-water containment, carried out water-retention testing on the completed tank before connection, and disinfected the reservoir in accordance with Miyahuna's commissioning requirements prior to bringing it into service. All structural concrete work was subject to CEC's standard testing regime, including cube testing and independent verification of reinforcement placement before each pour.
