A landmark five-star resort on the shores of the world's lowest sea — constructed by CEC to the exacting standards of IHG's international hotel brand.
The Holiday Inn Dead Sea stands as one of Jordan's most recognisable hospitality landmarks — an internationally branded, five-star resort located on the western shore of the Dead Sea at approximately 430 metres below sea level. CEC was engaged as the main civil engineering and construction contractor responsible for the complete structural and architectural works of this landmark project.
The Dead Sea resort corridor is Jordan's landmark hospitality address. In a market where every aspect of construction quality is immediately visible to international guests and hospitality brand auditors, there is no tolerance for compromise on structural integrity, architectural finishes, or systems reliability. CEC delivered this project to the full standard required by an international hotel operating company — a standard that defines quality at the global level.
The project encompasses the main hotel structure, guest room wings, resort amenities including pools and recreational facilities, landscaping and external works, back-of-house operational infrastructure, and all associated civil engineering to connect the resort to Jordan's road, water, and power networks.
The Dead Sea presents construction challenges that exist nowhere else in the world. At 430 metres below sea level, the site sits in one of the most geologically and climatically extreme environments on the planet. CEC's engineering team addressed each of these challenges through careful design, material selection, and construction methodology.
At the Dead Sea's elevation, atmospheric pressure is approximately 5% higher than at sea level. While this does not directly affect structural design, the extreme salt environment — with the Dead Sea's 34% salinity creating hypersaline conditions in groundwater and ambient moisture — has profound implications for material durability. CEC specified and used sulphate-resistant Portland cement for all concrete works, enhanced rebar cover depths, and epoxy-coated reinforcement in zones of high salinity exposure to ensure a design service life of 50+ years for the reinforced concrete structure.
The Dead Sea shoreline sits at the geological transition between the Jordan Rift Valley's recent alluvial sediments and the lacustrine deposits of the receding sea. Foundation conditions require careful investigation and design — CEC employed deep foundation systems appropriate to the site's geotechnical profile, with pile testing and load monitoring to confirm performance before structural loads were applied.
Summer temperatures at the Dead Sea regularly exceed 45°C, with high humidity in the lower layers of the atmosphere. Concrete placement during summer months required strict temperature management protocols — including pre-chilled mix water, ice addition to concrete mixes, early-morning or night pours for critical structural elements, and post-pour curing regimes to prevent thermal cracking in massive concrete pours. CEC's site management team maintained these protocols consistently throughout the construction programme.
CEC's scope of work on the Holiday Inn Dead Sea encompassed the following principal activities:
The Holiday Inn Dead Sea was completed and handed over to the client for fit-out and brand installation by IHG's interior design and procurement teams. The structural and architectural shell delivered by CEC met the full requirements of IHG's international quality and design standards — enabling the property to open as a full-service, internationally branded five-star resort.
Today, the Holiday Inn Dead Sea is one of the most recognisable properties in Jordan's resort corridor — welcoming guests from across the world to the unique experience of the Dead Sea, and standing as a visible testament to CEC's capacity to deliver to international hospitality quality standards in one of the world's most challenging construction environments.
The project's success contributed directly to CEC's subsequent award of the Mövenpick Dead Sea resort construction contract — confirming CEC's position as the contractor of choice for Jordan's five-star hospitality development sector.
CEC has delivered Jordan's landmark five-star hospitality projects. From the Dead Sea to Amman — we build to international brand standards, on time and on budget.
